Papers, 1760-1762, concern the estate of Willoughby Allerton of Westmoreland County, Va., preparred in part by Richard Lee; copy, 1800, signed by Daniel Brodhead, of a survey, 23 June 1774, of 167 acres land in Northampton County, Pa.; and copies, 1834, of record book entries, 1778-1779, for the payment of Silas Deane, made by Joseph Nourse while serving as U.S. Assistant Auditor General. The papers also include a copy of a survey, 1783, recorded by Isaac Hite, for 1000 acres of land in Fayette County, Ky.; records, 1804, concerning a dispute between Joseph Nourse and Isaac Hite over land in Jefferson County, Va.; papers, 1788-1829, of Joseph Nourse, regarding John Bull, lands belonging to his wife, Mary Nourse, Revolutionary War claims, and the sale of a house in Washington, D.C., belonging to James McKim. The papers also include a copy, 1799, of an indenture, 1797, transferring land in Montgomery County, Md., and Georgetown, D.C. to Thomas Armat; a letter, 30 July 1800, from Elias Boudinot, Philadelphia, Pa., to Joseph Nourse, Washington, D.C., soliciting a subscription for publications of the Presbyterian Church; and a letter, 28 July 1800, from Jonathon Dayton, Elizabeth, N.J., regarding debts accrued by Dayton while serving as Speaker of the House. The papers also include legal documents, 1804-1805, of Elisha Boyd, including a British writ of dedimus potestatem and procedural instructions signed by Anthony Highmore, regarding land in London transferred to Joseph Nourse; and power of attorney, 15 Septmber 1808, of London merchants Coxe & Meilan, appointing Josph and Charles Josephus Nourse to act as their agents in the United States. The papers also include an account, 1827-1828, of William Gilliss with the U.S. Indian Trade Department; a letter 27 July 1832, from Peter B. Porter, Black Rock, N.Y., to Charles Josephus Nourse, Georgetown, D.C., regarding legal matters; and powers of attorney, 1841-1844, one wittnessed by William Cooke Pease, appointing Charles Josephus Nourse to act as agent for members of the U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service in claims against the United States. The papers also include a petition, ca. 1844, for the relief of U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service members who served in Florida and the West Indies during 1836-1838; a memorial, n.d., requesting the establishment of a bank to serve Georgetown and Alexandria, D.C.; clippings, ca. 1861-1865, describing naval battles during the Civil War; and a drawing, n.d., of an unidentified house.
